Our story

In May of 2000, Larry and Nancy Dean opened The Kountry Candy Store, a cozy roadside gem in the heart of the Panhandle in Alford, FL. Larry quickly became a local legend, known for his humor, kindness, and determination. He made history with “The Great Sign War,” which led to the passing of “The Candy Bill,” ensuring stores like ours could continue advertising along the highway.

In 2006, Larry and Nancy’s daughter, Lacy, bought the store from her parents, ensuring the family legacy would continue under her care. Her dedication to the business has preserved its values and traditions, making The Kountry Candy Store a beloved community treasure.

Sadly, Larry passed away in August of 2021, but his legacy of hard work and community spirit lives on in every part of the store. Today, Lacy continues the family’s commitment to quality and service. She’s proud to offer a wide variety of homemade candies, including creamy fudge, pecan pralines, chocolate-dipped pretzels, peanut brittle, and old-fashioned favorites like divinity. The shop also serves hand-dipped ice cream, jams and jellies, seasonal treats, and specialty items like pure honey and cane syrup.

The Kountry Candy Store isn’t just a place to satisfy your sweet tooth—it’s part of the fabric of the community. Lacy sees it as her duty to give back to the people that have supported her family’s business for so many years. She proudly sponsors the Student of the Month program at Cottondale Elementary School and contributes to numerous local organizations, helping neighbors in need and supporting community growth. It’s not about recognition; it’s about gratitude and doing her part to give back to those who’ve made the store a success.

You can still follow the iconic signs along Highway 231 to find The Kountry Candy Store. Whether you stop by for a scoop of hand-dipped ice cream, a batch of homemade candy, or a jar of local honey, you’ll always be welcomed like family. Can’t make it in? Shop online and share the sweetness with yourself or a loved one.
